Roommate compatibility: match on how you live

Learn what makes roommates compatible, what Bindyl's 18-question lifestyle quiz compares, and how to discuss shared living before choosing digs.

Compatibility is more than liking the same things

Two people can enjoy the same music and still be miserable sharing a kitchen. Roommate compatibility is mostly about expectations, routines, and the way small household decisions are handled every day. Budget and location decide whether a living arrangement is possible; behaviour and communication often decide whether it lasts.

Bindyl's compatibility quiz is designed around those repeatable shared-living situations. It does not diagnose personality, decide who is a good or bad person, or guarantee that a match will work. It gives potential roommates a structured way to spot alignment and talk about differences before signing a lease.

What the 18-question roommate quiz covers

Cleanliness & shared space

Mess tolerance, dishes, clutter, chores, supplies, and what each person considers an acceptable baseline.

Sleep, noise & focus

Typical schedules, quiet hours, noise sensitivity, studying or working at home, and how much calm each person needs.

Guests & social energy

How often friends visit, overnight guests, time spent at home, and whether home feels social or private.

Money & shared items

Bills, groceries, restocking household supplies, borrowing, and how quickly shared expenses should be settled.

Communication & conflict

How directly people raise problems, receive feedback, repair disagreements, and communicate household expectations.

Boundaries & connection

Privacy, personal belongings, desired closeness, and whether roommates expect friendship or mainly respectful co-living.

How to read a compatibility score

The percentage is a summary of how closely two sets of answers align. A stronger score means fewer or smaller differences across the measured areas. It does not mean that you should skip the conversation. A lower score is not automatically a rejection either: some differences are easy to negotiate, while one important mismatch can matter more than several similarities.

Use the score as a question generator

Ask: “Where do our answers differ, how strongly does each of us care, and what would a fair household rule look like?” That conversation is more useful than treating the number as a verdict.

Bindyl also lets people state hard constraints. Those are preferences a person considers non-negotiable, such as smoking-related boundaries. Being honest about a dealbreaker protects both people from wasting time.

Compatibility questions to ask before moving in

  • What does “clean enough” mean in the kitchen and bathroom?
  • When should the home be quiet on weekdays and weekends?
  • How often are visitors or overnight guests comfortable?
  • How will rent, electricity, Wi-Fi, groceries, and supplies be split?
  • Which belongings are shared, and what requires permission?
  • How should either person raise a problem without it becoming personal?
  • What happens if someone pays late or wants to leave early?
  • Do we want to socialise together, or mainly share the space respectfully?

Lifestyle fit still needs practical fit

Even very compatible people need a workable housing plan. Compare realistic monthly budgets, deposit availability, preferred neighbourhoods, transport needs, move-in dates, lease length, parking, pets, and whether either person already has a room.

In Stellenbosch, a short distance can change how someone gets to class, work, shops, or evening commitments. Be clear about the area and radius you can manage instead of agreeing to a location that will cause daily frustration. Bindyl uses practical preferences alongside lifestyle answers so the people you compare have a plausible path to sharing digs.

Be honest, not aspirational

The best quiz answer describes how you normally live—not how you think an ideal roommate should answer. If dishes often wait until the next morning, say so. If you need quiet to sleep, say so. If you prefer separate groceries or regular visitors, make that visible.

Honest answers may reduce the number of apparent matches, but they make each suggestion more useful. You can learn more about the full journey on how Bindyl roommate matching works.
